Reading 136-151: Violet Hunt’s Tales of the Uneasy

r136-151

Nine twisty-turny tales of tragic human drama, played out in Victorian parlors, death beds and lonely country roads. This collection of Violet Hunt writings has all the requirements for short story entertainment: flirtatious beauties, mismatched love, ”lung symptoms”, and cruel, cruel fate. Sometimes the horror has a ghostly source, but often the horror is rooted in our very human pathology.

Coming this January…

r136-151

In January we’ll start up with “Tales of the Uneasy” by Violet Hunt

Violet Hunt was a British novelist, biographer, and literary hostess born in 1862 to novelist Margaret Hunt and painter Alfred Hunt. She was a part of the pre-Raphaelite social circle that included Oscar Wilde, Radclyffe Hall, and Ford Madox Brown with whom she lived for 10 years. Hunt was considered a New Woman novelist, and her works are comprised of seventeen novels, three collections of short stories, two autobiographical memoirs, and numerous journal articles.

Hunt also wrote two collections of supernatural stories, Tales of the Uneasy and More Tales of the UneasyTales of the Uneasy was described by E. F. Bleiler as containing “Excellent stories, in which the supernatural is used as a technical device to indicate ironies of fate and the intimate relationship of life and death.” Tales of the Uneasy was also included by horror historian R. S. Hadji on his list of “unjustly neglected” horror books.

The Beetle 107-134

The Beetle

Richard MARSH (1857 – 1915)the_beetle

A story about a mysterious oriental figure who pursues a British politician to London, where he wreaks havoc with his powers of hypnosis and shape-shifting, Marsh’s novel is of a piece with other sensational turn-of-the-century fictions such as Stoker’s Dracula, George du Maurier’s Trilby, and Sax Rohmer’s Fu Manchu novels. Like Dracula and many of the sensation novels pioneered by Wilkie Collins and others in the 1860s, The Beetle is narrated from the perspectives of multiple characters, a technique used in many late nineteenth-century novels (those of Wilkie Collins and Stoker, for example) to create suspense.
