Aldebaran C

A Second course of Ashes

In 2233 CE an artificial moon 65 light years from Earth was colonized, orbiting a massive planet(Aldebaran B), near a Red Giant star(Aldebaran).
2063 the Earth send many NanoTerraformers to areas of distant space that were deemed suitable by a collection of scientists who were taken with saving humanity and Earth by sending its seeds across the stars. They got as far as sending out terraformers in phase 1, vessels to seed the new planets with workers and animal life were part of phase 2. Phase 3 was canceled due to an unpublished public outrage.

Many NanoCloning facilities  were sent out into the stars, but this is about the clones on an artifical moon called Aldebaran C. Clones are initially trained in a long dream while forming, the dream generally takes place in the late 1890’s, 1940’s, or 2010’s to give clone groups a common cultural continuity to identify with(It’s easier to train soldiers in a war, artists and crafters in an opulent industrial city, or basic service people or near-mindless workers in an post-war suburban Information Age. More often than not, what you believe to be a series ruins will vanish in a few days. Shelter is a constant concern. Housing built tend to be more stable but can change in materials, size or contents slowly overtime.

Upon waking clones find themselves in a world slowly fading from their dreams around them. Objects slowly change shape and meaning, or loose all meaning over a few days. Landscapes twist from false memories while being cloned into your current hell scape; 1890s Paris melts into ghostly half formed cities built for no one. Clones are normally printed in batches(several copies of the same person) when enough raw human materials can be converted into raw materials used for creating clones. All animal life on Aldebaran C  is based off of the human genome due to a nano builder malfunction or are aboriginal to the moon. Most clones consume plant life that takes the form of slimes, weeds, and gourds. Clones live roughly 10 years, although the average lifespan is One year. Most groups have a harder time establishing hierarchy among duplicates of the exact same ego, then they do excepting their current ever shifting reality.

Lack of History

No one knows where they are unless they purposely teleported or projected their minds to Aldebaran C, no one knows where this star system is otherwise. No clone was told their purpose or location upon being printed in the beginning. There is little to no history or shared mythology. Small communities have formed and most have decided it’s better to not think about the nature of creation, or are building an army for the King and intrenched in YK mythology. Some towns claim royal lineage, some towns claim to be descendent of a group of lost space miners(or astrophysics students or kids who when on a carnival ride, or a group of Atlantean soldiers hunting a necromancer set up a trading post, etc.). Most of the time you just find the aftermath of a violent battle, if you’re lucky maybe someone left something behind. Blood Sun demands everything be burned.

Blood Sun

There is a religion forming, the belief that Aldebaran C being an ancient prison that the warden-god forgot, many cannibalistic slavers follow this deity they named “Blood Sun”. From what can be understood “They are the worst, here to do the worst, they are the devils of Hell, the devil will reward them for service.”.
Rights to “Blood Sun” are more awful than you can imagine. Blood Sun hates language, possessions, anything not Blood Sun. Blood sun requires you to feed yourself first, destroy anything that is “not Blood Sun” second, anything not destroyed is to be used to build a tower to Blood Sun. Blood Sun may be a myth, there may only be people pretending to be Blood Sun members to intimidate other towns, but also at the same time becoming Blood Sun members as a result.
Blood Sun may be a virus transmitted via language.

Rules Suggestions & Alterations

Use the rulesets based on the gameplay you are going for. If this is just a Fall of Delta Green”Robinson Crusoe” adventure, use that rule set. Is it more of a pulpy romp? Trail of Cthulhu.
We highly recommend using this in conjunction with the cards for YKRPG, the more freeform the game gets the more we suggest using the cards to maintain some structure.

How do I make story?

But what about a plot DB? duh, use a story wheel:
Home>>>Need>>>Leave>>>Lost>>>Found>>>Find>>>Take>>>Home
Ex 1: 1967 Earth>>>need to spy on the Reds>>>use portal to spy on reds>>>portal leads to Aldebaran C, oops>>>Hunted by Blood Sun>>>find village that knows how to get back home>>>take their transportation to Blood Sun camp and drive transport into portal home>>>1967 Earth now knows about Blood Sun…

Ex 2: Soldiers in 1947 Europe fighting against the Yellow King wander onto Aldebaran C>>>Need to get home>>>try to leave endless city>>>End up lost in a giant castle full of walking dead>>>Found by scientist who can help them if they get parts and promise to be faithful to the king upon return>>>Find place with parts and bad things(monsters & traps)>>>Take stuff to scientist, scientist is true to his word and also exposes you to awesome amounts of the Yellow King to send you home>>>1947 Europe but you have changed…

Ex 3: Clones in ruins>>>Look for water>>>wind up in swamp>>>found water and Blood Sun>>>find dungeon and find transport>>>take transport&fight guardians>>>Get to nicer ruins w/ new transport.

Characters

Whether you’re a clone or you get here by other means, you are where you are.
If you can’t get away from here you have got to figure out how you are going to survive on an artificial moon with little resources that are constantly being fought over. Thin air, poor soil, and little precipitation. Ironically physical, inedible objects can be printed at will. Whether it be a fine suit or a jewel encrusted saber, none of it has real value compared to water or food.

How did you get here? Are you really a clone? Did you end up here due to a miscast spell? Did someone build a portal to Carcosa and forget to carry the one? Did you anger someone or something powerful, so they threw you somewhere you can’t make trouble. Is any of it real? Is this an elaborate lie to pry secrets from you?

This is a gumshoe setting that lets you create your character using other gumshoe settings. Maybe your team is a group of clones based on the same artist, or a military engineers from ‘Fall of Delta Green’, or bring back your old squad from YKRPG. You are a group that is stuck and either need to leave or set up a stable life in a doomed hellscape. What does escape mean? Are you going to wake up in Paris or Saigon tomorrow, like last week?

Aldebaran C

The thin smokey air burns the eyes on bad days. If you can’t figure out how to build a solar still/dew catcher in the first few days you are going to die, unless you take someone else’s water. Individuals either parish or join larger groups that either form raider bands, farming communities, or nomadic scavenging groups.

There are few places that people live, and town and cites flow like a tide, sometimes literally. Small towns pop up from time to time, none are very stable. What you need to worry about is when you see a city, large civilizations that spawn out of nowhere are rarely friendly and seem to vanish in a week. The hordes of Blood Sun worshipers build a tower to reach Aldebaran out of what they can not burn, otherwise they do not build.
